Praia da Luz

PRAIA DA LUZ Luz is a Portuguese parish in the municipality of Lagos, however everyone knows it as Praia da Luz. The wide walkway in Portuguese calçada with sea view, offers not only a panoramic view of the beach, but also offers great esplanades to enjoy refreshing drinks in the summer heat and winter sun. Flanked by large palm trees, this walkway merges to the west with the walls of the fortress originally built to protect the Igreja da Luz from the attacks of pirates from North Africa.

The beach itself is characterized by the fine white sands of the Algarve and its calm, clean and transparent water. Still on the beach, an extensive rocky platform of warm colors and very sculpted by the sea displays marine fossils and some of the life of the intertidal range: anemones, limpets, whelks and colored algae. To the east, the cliff rises, carved in limestone and marl and heavily ravines due to the flow of water. On this whitish cliff, a very dark rock formation stands out in the landscape: it is called Rocha Negra, a volcanic vein in the Serra de Monchique that extended to the sea.

In the Praia da Luz area, we can also find the Roman Archaeology Station, which is formed by the ruins of a bathing building and several tanks that were used to salt fish.
